The thoughtful Peng Dongshu

This year marks the ninth year since Peng Dongshu joined Lizhu Fuxing.

In nine years, Peng Dongshu has achieved a leap in his career at Lizhu Fuxing, from a newly hired operator to a technician and now a team leader, step by step, relying on his curiosity. Peng Dongshu said that he doesn't have a high education and isn't as smart as others, so he can only use the time when others are resting to think things through; time does not deceive people, and effort will yield results.

Nine years ago, when Peng Dongshu just became an operator in the Fuxing Wangu workshop, he was overwhelmed by the various tanks and dense pipelines in the workshop, as well as nearly a hundred equipment valves on the machines. The workshop master told him that his future job would be to ensure the pipelines are sealed and unobstructed and to operate these equipment valves to ensure safe operation. The sequence of opening and closing the valves represents the order of processes and the workflow, so he must remember the function of each valve clearly and the order of opening and closing them.

Although it was a bit overwhelming, Peng Dongshu had a natural fondness for these machines and loved to tinker with these 'iron lumps'.

At work, he became a loyal assistant to the workshop master, observing how to operate, which valve to open first, and which to open later. After one or two times, one or two days, Peng Dongshu found it difficult to clearly remember the sequence of opening and closing these valves just by memory. What should he do?

A good memory is not as good as a bad pen, Peng Dongshu thought, so he decided to use a small notebook to draw a simple diagram of the workshop, clearly marking the pipelines and valves, and numbering the valves. When operating, he could just follow the numbers, ensuring everything would be foolproof.

Having figured it out, it was time to take action. Just talking without practice is just a show, Peng Dongshu said he would do it.

After work, Peng Dongshu bought a small notebook that he could carry with him and used his break time to draw a simple diagram of the workshop in it. During work, he followed the workshop master and marked the sequence of valve operations in the notebook. This scene was discovered by the workshop master, who fully affirmed his actions, saying, 'You really love to think things through!'

With this secret weapon, Peng Dongshu quickly became very familiar with the workshop's operations.

Opportunities are always reserved for those who are prepared. Peng Dongshu's performance was recognized by the workshop supervisor and manager. A year later, he was promoted to technician, becoming the youngest master in the workshop. In his second year at Lizhu Fuxing, due to his outstanding performance in the establishment of the Tikaline production line, he was promoted to team leader, becoming a grassroots manager.

Peng Dongshu has grown, but he has not become arrogant.

From 2015 to 2016, Peng Dongshu assisted in the establishment of the Daptomycin production line and achieved mass production of Daptomycin, increasing the output from about 10kg/month to 25kg/month, and reducing the refining cost from 25,300 yuan/kg to 15,100 yuan/kg.

From 2016 to 2017, Peng Dongshu assisted in the establishment of the Milbemycin production line and completed production, increasing the monthly output of Milbemycin from 60kg to 142kg.

In 2018, Peng Dongshu assisted the department manager in leading newcomers to complete the resumption of Tikaline production, increasing the maximum output before resumption from 50kg/month to 182kg/month.

In 2016, during the Wangu and Tikaline EU-GMP re-examination, he was responsible for the on-site management of the Tikaline production line, which passed smoothly. In 2017, during the WHO audit of the single card, he was responsible for the on-site management of the single card production line, which passed smoothly. In 2018, during the FDA re-examination, he was responsible for the on-site management of the single card production line, which passed smoothly.

Today, Peng Dongshu is participating in the construction of the second phase of the Lizhu Fuxing production line, which will be an excellent platform for him to showcase his skills. In his heart, a craftsman is someone with a sense of responsibility, completing tasks assigned by leaders promptly, and thinking through every job to reap rewards.

Zhou Lingyu's refinement

The Semi-Synthetic Refinement Center is a research and development department established by Lizhu Fuxing to improve existing product processes, reduce costs, and enhance quality. The shy and inarticulate Zhou Lingyu is well-suited for this deep dive into research and development.

Zhou Lingyu summarizes his understanding of the work at the Refinement Center in three words: refinement. Refinement means focusing on details, processes, quality, and effects, striving for excellence in every detail and seeking the best.

Zhou Lingyu said that refinement research and development is about optimizing existing process technologies. For example, before starting an experiment, we need to develop a feasible refinement process based on existing theoretical knowledge, standardize operations during the experiment, execute according to the experimental plan, and not change the process on our own during the process. We must keep good experimental records and statistically analyze, compare, and analyze the experimental data. After confirming the feasibility of the process, we then refine the parameters in the process, such as temperature, time, and material input. Through extensive data analysis and result discussions, we select the optimal process.

Research and development cannot be careless, and refinement research and development must also find faults and pick at details.

Zhou Lingyu is particularly impressed by the development of a new process for the polymyxin B methanesulfonate project. Due to high energy consumption and unstable quality of products produced by the old process, he reviewed relevant literature and designed a new synthetic route. During the synthesis process, he found that directly using raw materials for synthesis would produce many impurities and that the components were not up to standard. Therefore, he began to separate and purify the raw materials, starting from selecting resins and elution agents. After extensive experiments and data analysis, he finally found suitable resins and elution agents, producing higher purity raw materials, laying the foundation for subsequent synthesis reactions. He then conducted numerous experiments on the synthesis conditions, determining the synthetic route and process parameters, significantly improving product quality and saving costs after going into production.

In 2017, Zhou Lingyu participated in the research and development of Travalent, completing the refinement of the synthesis process for the side chain of Travalent, increasing the purity of the side chain synthesis from the original process of 70% to 99%.

In 2018, Zhou Lingyu completed the pilot experiment of Teralvan Star, and optimized the process steps during the experiment, improving product quality. He obtained Teralvan Star samples, which, after testing and comparison, showed that the purity of Teralvan Star samples was better than that of the original formulation (purity of laboratory-prepared samples > 98%, purity of original formulation about 95~96%).

As advocated by Wang Weimin, the general manager of Lizhu Fuxing, regarding talent management—putting the right person in the right job, Zhou Lingyu, this young man, can showcase his strengths in advancing research and development.
